Weekend Projects in Dollhouse Making

Now whoever thought dollhouse making was child’s play? Dollhouses have been popular with children and collectors for centuries now but if you plan to build a dollhouse, you need substantial planning and some good accessories to work with.

Dollhouse making is a fun weekend project where you and your family and indulge in building something together. While your children may think of painting their own house as a chore, dollhouse making will seem fun and the family gets to spend some quality time together. If you don’t have the time to make a dollhouse you can go out and purchase one but remember, readymade dollhouses found in toy stores are quite expensive.

When you decide on spending a few quality hours on making a dollhouse, you should begin with some planning. For one, decide on how the dollhouse will be used – will children actually play with it or will it be a beautiful collectible? Once you know the use, deciding on the material to use and design to implement in making the dollhouse is much easier to freeze on. If possible begin with a drawing of the proposed dollhouse and also make a sundry list of all the items that will be used in making the dollhouse. Procuring basic like wood, nails, and paint is not hard.

Apart from planning the basic structure of the dollhouse you also need to decide on the figurines and items to do up the interiors with. In fact, deciding on the interiors first actually helps decide on the scale of the proposed dollhouse. The most common scale for which many pre-fabricated dollhouse items are available is 1/12 where every one-inch of the dollhouse represents one foot of the human world.

When the plan is to saw and hammer together the dollhouse yourself, it is best to avoid very ambitious designs is you are not an expert carpenter. Working with the small scales of the dollhouse can be challenging and it is best to stick to simple cottage designs and one-floor houses when you are making the dollhouse yourself. Also, pre-assemble the pieces like shutters and windows instead of opting for constructing them on the spot they are to be installed.

Dollhouse making is hard work but it is fun and it is in this miniature world that even adults can give free reign to their creativity and the child within.
